The Patient Safety Structural Measure: A New Initiative Designed to Reduce Medical Errors

Recognizing that preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries are estimated to account for the deaths of 250,000 people annually, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has expanded public reporting by hospitals on rates of patient safety events. Furthermore, CMS recently introduced the Patient Safety Structural Measure, effective 2025.
